Choosing a Replacement Apostle

Filed under: Apostles, Christianity, Religion — Admin Staff @ 10:34 am

After the resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus, the eleven faithful Apostles, along with about one hundred of Jesus’ disciples were gathered together in an upper room in Jerusalem, waiting for the promised blessing of the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:4-15 And while waiting, the Apostle Peter remembered the prophecies concerning Judas in the book of Psalms, “Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick [office of an overseer] let another take.” Acts 1:20 From this, Peter urged his brethren that they should choose from among those who were faithful followers of Jesus a replacement for the betrayer, Judas.

This replacement had to be a believer who had witnessed the life and resurrection of their Lord. They selected two honored Christians from among them, Justus* and Matthias, and prayed for the Father to bless which one He wanted to replace Judas. “…and they gave forth their lots: and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” Acts 1:21-26

*It is possible that Justus is the same as Barnabas, also called Joses in Acts 4:36. Joses is the same as “Joseph called Barsabas who was surnamed Justus” in Acts 1:23. More will be written on Barnabas in the next chapter on the Apostle Paul.

Now, Matthias was definitely a faithful example to the early Church. We know he was a Jew, because the call of the Church had not yet gone out to the Gentiles. He was probably from a faithful Jewish household, for his name means “Gift of Jehovah.” It is very possible that he was a former follower of John the Baptist, for Peter noted this as one of the qualifications they looked for in a replacement. Act 1:21,22 And by these qualifications, it is quite likely also that he was one of the 70 disciples that Jesus sent out to preach by the power of the Holy Spirit. Luke 10:1 Matthias would have been a very responsible and active example of a believer, otherwise he would not have been selected to such a place of honor among the brethren.

Even though Matthias was quite capable as a good Christian example to replace Judas, and the Apostles in their zeal were trying to do God’s will, for many reasons they were wrong to jump ahead of the Lord. One reason was that Jesus simply told them to stay in Jerusalem and “wait for the promise of the Father….” He did not direct them to take matters of great importance to the Church into their own hands. Another reason was that they had not yet received the Holy Spirit, which would have given clearer wisdom in such matters. Finally, Peter should have known through the many lessons of his walk with the Lord, that he should beware of his tendency toward acting out first, before considering the consequences. He should have been very cautious with his impetuous nature. Even though the Heavenly Father appreciated the zeal of their hearts, He ignored their error and let time prove to them that He was quite able to make His own choice of an Apostle to replace Judas. Reprint 549-552

Jehovah had another plan and was preparing an instrument of His own choosing—Saul of Tarsus. But, Saul? The Apostles would never have chosen him! He would become known as one of the most noted persecutors of the Church and soon would even assist in the stoning of their beloved Stephen! Acts 7:57-60 God would prove to the early Church and to all believers that He could take the misguided zeal of Saul, and by His Holy Spirit, transform him into the most noted of the twelve Apostles. I Cor. 1:26-29 & II Cor. 11:5 Much is known of the faithful Apostle Paul through the Scriptures, and his conversion and life will be discussed in detail in the next chapter.

But what of Matthias? When he saw that God had not blessed him to be the Apostle to replace Judas, did he become jealous or hurt and fight for his right to be an Apostle? Did he storm off in disgust and leave the flock of the Lord? It is likely that he did not, for history claims him to be very active in the witness of the Gospel. All Christians should learn a lesson by this humble loving spirit which would rejoice in the special blessings of others. In I Corinthians 13:4 we read that love envies not. The fact that others had chosen Matthias to replace Judas was a testimony of his loving character toward the Lord and his brethren.

Tradition states that Matthias helped in spreading the Gospel as far as Armenia and Ethiopia. It is thought that he was imprisoned and blinded by the Ethiopians and then was rescued by the Apostle Andrew. Historians believe that the final mission of Matthias was in Jerusalem where he was stoned to death for his ministry to Jesus.

We recall that Matthias and Justus were present with the 120 disciples gathered in the upper room who received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It is certain, through the Scriptural records that Matthias and Justus were well respected by the eleven faithful Apostles and even though they were not numbered as one of the twelve Apostles, they can be respected by the Church as faithful followers of the Lamb.

  1. Who replaced apstole James when he died in Acts 12:2?

If apostolic succession is true, then one would expect the book of acts to record his replacement. We also read in scripture that the twelve apostles will rule over the twelve tribes. So, did the office of apostle simply die out with the apostles themselves?

  2. Daniel,

When Jesus picked his apostles he picked twelve, no more, no less. (Mark 3:14) After Judas turned traitor and killed himself, the other 11 apostles, through their study of the relative scriptures relating to this particular issue, decided to replace him so there would remain 12. (Acts 1:16-26 Psa 109: 8) While they were rightly motivated, Jesus evidently had other ideas regarding apostleship, because he himself chose the apostle Paul. (Acts 9:3-16) Whether or not Matthias, who was chosen by the apostles by lot, was ever accepted by Jesus as an apostle and received the evidences of apostleship, namely the gifts of the holy spirit, isn’t stated.

That is the end of what is known about the issue. There isn’t anything related to apostolic succession recorded in the bible. There are many parables related to God’s Kingdom, but apostolic succession isn’t addressed directly, or by inference. It would seem that if such a thing were to be so, the formula of 12 would have been adhered to. That is not recorded in the bible.

Paul indicates in 1Cor 13 that the spiritual gifts would end. That is strong supporting evidence for no apostolic succession. That, along with no evidence in support of it, would indicate that there isn’t any reason to believe such a thing occurred. Anything else is mere conjecture, and not supported by the scriptures in any meaningful way. So then, the evidence from the bible seems to be that, yes the office of apostleship seems to have stopped with the originals. One of the strongest evidences we have today is that there doesn’t seem to be anyone around with the credentials of an apostle, let alone 12. And there isn’t any record of succession to point to for validation of such a thing.

I hope this has been helpful.

  3. THere is no such thing as Apostolic Succession! There has only been ONE and ONE only in history. We have to see why it was allowed. When the Apostles reunited in Jerusalem(Acts 1:12) with the church it gives us the reason why this is the ONLY succesion that ever was and ever will be:
“MEn and brethen, this scriptures must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.”
what was King David’s(a man chosen of GOd) prophecy?
    Acts1:20 and Psalms 69:25
“For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let non man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.”
This is the ONLY reason why this succession took place: BECAUSE IT WAS ALREADY WRITTEN THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN! and it was spoken by GOd through King David.ref.Heb1:1 GOd has spoken in many ways through the men he choses!
There has not been anymore prophecy that would allow APostolic SUccesion!
God had already planned this(So that the Scripture could be Fulfilled) and since he already had planned this, he had another one to take his place. Now Matthias was not elected by Peter or any of the other Apostles. They picked two of the that had been True Witnesses of Jesus Christ.
    Acts 1:21….
THey came down to two of them, but even though they had Both men, Joseph and Matthias, they know that the election of an Apostle(a man chosen only by God) was not something that was up to them.
This is where the reall election was.
    Acts 1:24-25
” and THEY PRAYED and said: ,Though,LORD, which knowest the heart of men of all men, shew whether of these two THOU HAST CHOSEN THAT HE MAY TAKE PART OF THIS MINISTRY AND THE APOSTLESHIP,from which Judas by transgression fell…”
THe Apostle themselves did not chose Matthais as the Successor of Judas. They simple were a mean that GOd used. THey knew that they(the Apostles) could not choose, because they do not know man’s heart but THey know God did. Now if you still think im crazy..then lets look at another example that shows how God uses different means to select the one he has Chosen.
We have said previously that David was a King, and he was a man chosen of GOd. WHo Chose him? was really Samuel himself that chose David to be the next King? ABSOLUTLEY NOT
GOd used Samuel so he can manifest who the one he chose to be king was. Samuel on his own couldn’t select. He went through the appearce of JEsse’s son’s
    1 Samuel 16:6
Samuel saw Eliab and thought to himself “surely this is God’s annoited” Now when he said that, God showed him that he should not look at the appearance because GOd Dosen’t look at the Physical features, but he looks at THIER HEART!
    Now Going back to Matthais
The Apostles knew that they couldn’t choose, because they didn’t know thier(joseph and Matthais) heart. They asked throught the prayer TO SHOW WHICH of THE TWO GOD HAD ELECTED. And thats how God picked Matthias.
Now once again THIS WAS THE ONLY CASE OF APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION that ever was, and ever will be!!!
    NOw to THe Second Question?
So, did the office of apostle simply die out with the apostles themselves?
If we pay close attention, GOD has always had a MAn that HE has chosen in front of his people and Church.
In the Beginning with Abraham,Moses, then came the prophets then he sent us HIs Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus, the one who redeemed us, wasn’t going to live on this earth forever, so thats why he established the Apostles, all of these were MEN CHOSEN BY GOD.
Now lets examine what happens when there isn’t a Man Chosen by the ALMIGHTY:
After Josef’s death the bible tell us in that the people of Israel was held captive under the Egiptians. (ref. Exodus 1:5) Now what was missing at this point? A MAN CHOSEN OF GOD.
the bible says that this lasted for 430 years. then came MOSES who GOd CALLED and only because of him was Israel able to come out of Egypt.
Now we said that, then came the kings the prophets that GOd Chose…Now what does GOd do with them?
HE REVEALS TO THEM AND ONLY TO THEM(ref. Amos 3: 8) Now according to studies there was a time where From Malachi to the New Testament, existed a so called Silence of GOd! what does this mean?
THAT THERE WAS NO MAN THAT GOD HAD CHOSED…and thus there was NO TRUE REVELATION, there was no word of GOd(ref.AMoS 8:11) In those times there was no light(talking spiritually) and man lived in confusion. this is a time when human doctrines came about(see Greek mythology) Men seeked to find answers, but man by himself can’t find answers unless there is Revelation of God. This Silence is said to last for about 400 years. so at during this time(300 B.C) Epicureans and stoics came to be….and even GOd’s people, becasue of the lack of A MAN OF GOD, went to the human philosophy and traditions.
THis is why JESUS CHRIST came to the world, to Bring light and Salvation to whoever believed in him. The Bible says that he came directly from the Father (GOD) to give testamony of the father. JESUS WAS SENT BY GOD TO THiS WORLD, thus MAKING HIM NOT ONLY A MAN OF GOD BUT HE WAS GOD’s VERY OWN SON!
Now when he came here to the world he went out and chose his disciples,( men that learned his doctrine and that would give testamony of the TRUTH, that came through Jesus), who he later selected twelve of them and named them APOSTLES! THEY ARE ALSO MEN CHOSEN BY GOD. THey were already elected and Jesus was the one who called them! NOW they were given Gods truth throught JEsus…and to them the truth also came to the rest of the world. JEsus was not going to be ETernal in this world( he was to be accepted in glory by the Father) so because of this he had to leave the 12 or 11( who later with Matthias became 12 again) so they could spread the Truth! and so the church(only one!because it never mentions two) that he established wouldn’t be alone without someone FROM GOD to guide them. THe Apostles went and Testified.
Now some say that those were the only ones.
Later we find in the Bible that it was GOd’s will to CALL(Their Election and CAlling are separate things) Saul to come to the ministry and the APOSTLESHIP. and Now we find that to his APostles is revealed the true Gospel of Christ(ref Gal.2:11 and Ef. 3:5) and only to them, and as we said they were put to govern the the CHURCH that Jesus established…(ref. Ef. 4:11)
    The Years go by…..
and there is the last of the apostles(of those times),John the Apostle. He was prosecuted and he died. When he died, as we have seen before, there was no more true man of God! This world came to confusion and this is the time when because of lack of revelation from God , men came up with absurd things, like the wrong Doctrine of the Trinity!!!(It the exact same thing that happened during the time of silence from the old to the new testament!) THat’s why there is misinterpetations of the BIble because there THe churches that claim to be a True church of God don’t have an APOSTOL!
NOW some claim to be in the TRUE CHURCH of GOD. If that were so Shouldnt there be an APOSTLE(man chosen by GOD) in front of the church with the exact same Doctrine than those of JEsus and the Apostles back then? If there is no man of God then there is no CHurch!
    But to our hope…..
THe bible does mention that there will be future Apostles. THere will be false one for sure…but there will Also be real ones!!
Revelations 6:11 Speaks of how its was said to the ones that were resting to rest a little while more until something happened: Until the # of the FELLOWSERVANTS and brothers would be fulfilled.
John was an APOSTLE and his Fellow servant refers to APOSTLE. so they were told to rest until the number of Apostles(who knows how many, but there will be more)…and the number of brothers were to be fulfilled!!! SO THERE Is CHURCH OF GOD that exist in this world today!!! AND THERE IS AN APOSTLE in it!!!
FOr all of you reading this..THere is a true church of God,one that is being Guided by a TRUE APOSTLE WITH THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST REVEALED to HIM!! The times are getting near, and i encourage everyone to look for this TRUE CHURCH OF GOD! And whoever has found someont that says they’re a true Apostle Challenge them..becasue it is said…if what they preach is from above then it must have no blemishes!! and if we challege it and find an error:then its not the Truth and thus it is not the church and its not the true word of GOD! i know i have found the real one….have you?
